Sumito, a worthy champion of Venezuelan gastronomy

Sumito Estévez was born on October 22, 1965 in Caracas, Venezuela. He was raised in Mérida, in a family where both his mother and father were passionate about cooking. However, his mother, Anú Singh was the main inspiration for his dream to become a chef.

In the year 1990, Sumito worked as Sous Chef in Seasons Club Kitchen, a restaurant owned by Venezuelan chef Franz Conde.

At first, Sumito did not feel identified with the flavors of Venezuelan food since he was primarily raised by his mother, who comes from Indian descent. However, in the year 2013, he began to focus on studying the flavors of the Venezuelan cuisine and worked very hard to put a spotlight on it. One of the ways in which he did this was founding the Instituto Culinario de Caracas alongside Chef Héctor Romero.

Estévez and Romero believed that in the kitchen, you learn by practice. Both wanted their students to view cooking as a profession and catering as a business.

Sumito positioned himself slowly, but surely, in the gastronomic world. He worked with Pierre Blanchard at Deuxieme Etage and was also chef at the Vinoteca Delfino; both restaurants are in Caracas.

He has hosted several TV shows: “Cocina al Cubo”, “Fusión”, “Lo Mejor de la Cocina Venezolana”, “Mi Receta. Tu Receta”, “Puro Sumo y Sumo Placer”, “S.O.S Sumito”, “Tradición Latina”, “Venezuela Mía con Sumito”. He has also written many books, been featured on radio shows, and written articles and columns for several newspapers in Venezuela.

As of right now, Sumito has an online cooking school, where he offers a wide range of workshops for entrepreneurs and cooking enthusiasts to improve their culinary techniques.

One of his most successful workshops is “Gestión de costos para gastronomía”, which focuses on learning how to manage the finances of your business efficiently to strengthen your business.  His latest releases include  “Cocina de la India” and “Reencuentro con las legumbres”. Both come with a participation certificate once completed, and you can study at your own pace.
