Chef Hugo Ortega’s gastronomic empire

It is impossible to talk about Houston’s gastronomic scene and not include Mexican-born Chef Hugo Ortega. He is the recipient of many awards, including the prestigious James Beard Award in 2017 for Best Chef: Southwest after being a finalist in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Chef Hugo has dedicated his life to serving the best dishes of Mexico in his restaurants with great pride and meticulousness.

When Chef Hugo arrived in Houston from Mexico in search of the American dream, he got his start washing dishes and cleaning floors. With great dedication and persistence, he has managed to become a pillar of Houston’s gastronomy. All while never losing the humility that is always present in his character.

Throughout the years and having the support of his outstanding team and his wife and partner Tracy Vaught, he has formed a gastronomic empire. His restaurants include Backstreet Café, Hugo’s, Caracol, Xochi, Origen in Oaxaca, Mexico and now, Urbe, his latest venture.
